General Questions

What makes Rough & Rigid fire pits different from other fire pits?

Our fire pits are handmade in the USA using 1/4-inch thick carbon steel from upcycled propane tanks, not flimsy store-bought metal. This heavy-duty, quality steel allows our pits to withstand extreme heat and last a lifetime. Our stationary fire pits also have a unique feature that allows you to tilt the fire pit bowl in any direction. Unlike mass produced fire pits, ours are handcrafted with precision and designed for durability, function, and style.

What is a tiltable fire pit?

A tiltable fire pit allows you to angle or tilt the bowl using slight pressure. Our tiltable models can tilt in all four directions. This allows for better heat direction (even when you have a smaller fire going), smoke and wind mitigation, and enhanced fire viewing. It’s one of our signature features that our customers rave about! Just be sure to place the fire pit back in the upright position when using the fire pit lid.

Are your fire pits made in the USA?

Yes! Every one of our fire pits is handcrafted in Kansas. We are a small husband and wife team and make each fire pit upon order. Supporting our business means supporting American craftsmanship and our Midwest family.

Are these fire pits wood-burning or gas?

All of our fire pits are wood-burning.

How long will a fire pit like this last?

Built from 1/4" carbon steel, our fire pits are built to last a lifetime — seriously. These are not the kind of pits you replace in two years. We even offer a lifetime warranty on the bowl.

Can I leave my fire pit outside year-round?

Yes, but we recommend using the fire pit lid to protect it from rain and snow. While these fire pits are incredibly durable, protecting them from the elements will help them be ready to burn when you are.

Does the bowl need an air hole for ventilation?

The contour of the fire pit bowl pulls the oxygen down making it easy to light and maintain your fire, so you do not need an air hole for ventilation on our models.

Use + Safety

How do you use the tilting feature?

The tilting base is easy to use — just place pressure to pivot the bowl to your desired angle. It's perfect for directing heat, mitigating smoke, and giving everyone around the fire a better view.

Is it safe to use a fire pit on a deck or patio?

Our fire pits get hot — really hot — so we don’t recommend placing them directly on a wood or composite deck without a heat barrier or fire-safe mat. Concrete patios or gravel areas are ideal.

Can I cook on the fire pit?

Absolutely! All our pits can be paired with same size grill grates for direct fire grilling. Our hanging Outlaw models also have a removeable hanging chain included in their purchase that can support cast iron cookware for your backyard cooking.

What kind of wood should I burn?

Use dry, seasoned hardwood like oak, hickory, or maple. avoid softwoods (like pine) or treated lumber, which can produce more smoke . These fire pits are great for yard clean-up.

Product Questions

What’s the difference between the tiltable and the hanging fire pits?

  • Tiltable Fire Pit: A stationary fire pit with a tiltable bowl and chain handles; perfect for directional heating, smoke mitigation, and perfect viewability
  • Hanging Fire Pit: Mounted on a sturdy metal tripod with 3 log chains; each purchase includes a fire pit lid and a removeable hanging chain that can be used for cooking; perfect for bringing your outdoor entertainment to the next level!

What fire pit sizes do you offer?

We offer 30", 37", and 40" bowls in both our tiltable and hanging fire pit Outlaw models. We also offer a slightly smaller, camping-style pit in 30” (Maverick). If you’re not sure what size is right for
you, message us — we’re happy to help!

How much do they weigh?

Our fire pits weigh between 75–200 lbs, depending on the model and size. That hefty weight is part of what makes them so durable and heat-retaining.

What’s included with my fire pit purchase?

Our Maverick and tiltable fire pit models come as described. Fire pit lids can be purchased separately for a perfect fit on any of these non-hanging models.

Our hanging Outlaw fire pit models come with the fire bowl, three log chains for hanging, a metal tripod, a matching size
fire pit lid, and a removable hanging cooking chain.

Add-ons like grill grates, fire pokers, and wood holders are sold separately.

Are your fire pits smokeless?

While our fire pits are not smokeless, we have designed our bowls to tilt (either through the base on our tiltable models or with the chain on our hanging models) to help decrease smoke.

Maintenance + Care

Is there a drain hole?

We do not put drain holes in our fire pits as they will leak dirty ash water if not covered with a fire pit lid when not in use. Depending on where you want to place your fire pit, many people do not want the mess under the fire pit as it drains. However, if you’d prefer one, we can add it; just contact us to request one be added!

Do I need to clean out the bowl?

After several fires just scoop the cooled ashes as needed and make sure to cover it with a fire pit lid when not in use to keep out the elements.

How can I protect my fire pit from rain and snow?

Use a fire pit lid when it’s not in use — it not only protects the bowl from the elements but also safely extinguishes the smoldering fire at the end of the burn; no flame baby-sitting required!

Will my fire pit rust?

Many people have a negative connotation with the word ‘rust’ because
they associate it with the breakdown of their product. So, in short, will your fire pit rust – yes; will it deteriorate like cheaper pits on the market - never. When you use high-quality steel, like we use for all our pits, this ‘rust layer’ occurs through natural oxidation as the steel is exposed to the elements; however, this layer actually protects and seals the metal instead of breaking it down. Over time, the oxidation process will stop and the fire pit will darken, leaving you with a beautiful, rustic patina! To get to that gorgeous dark rich chocolate color even quicker, we recommend spraying the exterior of the lid, fire pit, and base with avocado oil seasonally. Just spray and walk away, letting it soak into the steel.

How do I care for my cooking grill grate?

After each use, we recommend cleaning your grill grate with a grill brush and spraying it with cooking oil.  When not using, be sure to store your grill grate indoors out of the elements, such as in a garage or a shed.

Other Common Questions

Are your fire pits eco-friendly?

Yes! We use upcycled propane tanks and locally sourced steel, keeping materials out of landfills and giving them a new, beautiful life.

Can I take this fire pit camping or on the go?

These are not lightweight fire pits. They’re meant to stay put — in your backyard, on your farm, or at your cabin. They’re ideal for permanent outdoor setups, not portable travel.

However, we do offer one slightly smaller, non-tilting stationary model (Maverick) that can be loaded up for camping and tailgates. Just be aware that it is still made out of heavy-duty steel and weighs roughly 75 lbs.
